MoMo Tokyo - New Year Shinnenkai by Mobikyo KKWe are launching 2006 with a stealth-mode event at the ultratrendy Ruby Cafe on 30 January. Considering the incredible popularity of our November Bonenkai evening - which saw CEOs, CTOs, VCs and a multitude of mobile professionals in the same room - we thought a casual meeting of the MoMo community would be in order to kick off 2006 and another great year of monthly Mobile Monday presentation evenings.
The year is sure to be a greyhound as new 3G licensees, new networks, IP telephones and convergence all take off down the track and force massive change in Japan's mobile market. MoMo will be right here bringing you together with the coolest companies, the most interesting people and the most significant technologies.
Note Next Month: We'll continue on Monday, 27 February with our regular programme at the upscale MTV Cafe in Harajuku including a full line-up of presentations and more great networking opportunities (full details asap).

On behalf of Morgan Lewis-TMI, thank you for your interest in our Mobile Industry Panel, held 30 January 2006 at the offices of TMI Associates. This invitation-only event featured a sneak preview of a new mobile product designed specifically for the Japanese market by Microvision, Inc., a leading display technology company, recently nominated by Red Herring as one of the Nine Mobile TV Firms to Watch.
The evening also included a panel discussion covering key trends and issues for 2006 in Japan's mobile industry. The panel had representatives of Walt Disney Internet Group, Nikko antfactory, CSK Venture Capital and Picsel Technologies and was moderated by one of the leading media and telecomm lawyers in Japan.
Co-Hosts:
John Y. Sasaki and Tatsuhiro Takahara – Partners – Morgan Lewis-TMI
Morgan Lewis-TMI is a joint venture between Morgan Lewis and TMI Associates. Morgan Lewis is one of the largest law firms in the world, with more than 1,200 lawyers in 19 offices worldwide. TMI Associates is one of the largest law firms in Tokyo, with over 100 Japanese lawyers and an additional 30 Japanese patent lawyers. Through the combined power of the two firms, Morgan Lewis-TMI offers a full spectrum of fully-integrated, cross-border legal services.
Featured Speaker:
Steve Willey - President of Consumer Solutions - Microvision, Inc.
One of the limitations on interactive mobile phone applications is the size of the screen. With Microvision's virtual display technology, images transmitted across mobile networks can be displayed in space, unlimited by the size of a phone screen. Imagine being able to see a spreadsheet transmitted via phone, or being able to play a video game on your mobile — in the air in front of your eyes. Steve Willey will provide a sneak preview of a new product developed specifically for the Japanese market.
Panel Moderator:
Tomohiro Tohyama – Partner – TMI Associates
With over 100 Japanese lawyers and an additional 30 Japanese patent lawyers, TMI Associates' combination of strengths in corporate transactions and intellectual property matters makes it unique among law firms in Japan. Tomohiro Tohyama is a founding partner of TMI and one of the most prominent telecommunications and media lawyers in Japan.
Featured Panelists include:
David Milstein - VP of Strategy and Business Development - Walt Disney Internet Group (Asia-Pacific)
Walt Disney Internet Group (Asia Pacific) (”WDIG AP”) launched its “Disney-i” mobile Internet business in August 2000, and now boasts more than 3 million subscribers. David Milstein is responsible for WDIG AP's strategy and business development in Japan and APAC (outside China).
Naoki “Nick” Kondo - Professional Partner - Nikko antfactory K.K.
Nikko antfactory is one of the leading financial services providers in Japan focusing on private enterprises. The firm's services range from venture capital and private equity financing to restructuring and M&A consulting. During his time at Nikko antfactory, Nick Kondo has led investments and management of Virgin Cinemas Japan, Artist House, Hyperfitness, Senior Communication, eBook Initiative Japan, Triwall, Recruit, and Aunt Stella's. He currently serves as President and CEO of Aunt Stella's.
Makoto Kaneshiro - Managing Director - CSK Venture Capital Co., Ltd.
CSK Venture Capital is one of Japan's leading venture capital firms. CSK's recent investments in the area of mobile technologies and services include Peregrine Semiconductors of the U.S., Picsel Technologies of the U.K., DxO of France, Horizon Semiconductors of Israel, GameTrust of the U.S., and IP Mobile of Japan. Makoto Kaneshiro is the Managing Director in charge of CSK's overseas investments.
Ali Adnan - Chief Operating Officer (Japan) - Picsel Technologies Ltd.

MTV Studio Cafe in Harajuku by Mobikyo KKSpecial thanks to all those who came out for our New Year Shinnenkai last week! It was a great way to kick off 2006. You might have noticed some of us were running a bit late as a result of the concurrent Mobile Industry Panel hosted by MoMo Tokyo sponsor Morgan Lewis - TMI on the same evening. By all accounts both events were packed and provided valuable mobile insight and connections for participants.
Now that the party season is over (Phew!), we're getting back into our regular MoMo format starting off this month at the MTV Studio Cafe in Harajuku for the next event on 27 February. We've got a line-up of super presentations from the cutting-edge mobile folks at DG Mobile and Technorati Japan. We'll be streaming live video to the fixed and mobile web, a MoMo first!
Kenichi Sugi — Project Manager — DG Mobile
Digital Garage Inc. was founded in Tokyo in 1995 and went public in December 2000. DG Mobile was founded as a strategic subsidiary in the mobile business area starting with “Mobile Contents Business for 3G” as its first business activity. In addition, DG Mobile is committed to the extension of its business into potential growth areas, including mobile commerce, overseas market and mobile advertising.
Fumi Yamazaki — Marketing Manager — Technorati Japan

MoMo-ers who attended last month's event at the MTV Studio Cafe will agree that it was the perfect space for hosting Mobile Monday, so we're thrilled to announce we'll be back there on 27 March with another stellar line up! It's no secret that mobile music has become the killer content of choice and we've booked a pair of industry giants — MTV Japan and KDDI's Lismo — to present their music strategy and mobile content plans.
We look forward to seeing one and all out again for yet another fantastic evening of mobile mingling! And if you can't be at the cafe in Harajuku in person then remember to log on to this site as we'll stream the event live to the web as well..!!

The 2nd annual Mobile Monday Global Summit brought together over 1,000 mobile business leaders from around the world on May 8th and 9th to attend this event held at the Wanha Satama Fair Center in Helsinki, Finland. Speakers at the conference, which focused on mobile trends and visions, profitability for businesses and fun for consumers, included Anssi Vanjoki (Executive Vice President, Nokia Multimedia), Ted Cohen (SVP of Digital Development & Distribution, EMI Music), Harri Koponen (CEO, Wataniya Telecom of Kuwait), Mikael Jungner (CEO, Finnish Broadcasting Corporation), Christian Lindholm (VP Global Mobile Products, Yahoo), as well as Jonas Kjellberg (Nordic Manager, Skype).
The highlight of the summit was the Mobile Monday Global Peer Awards competition and party. What makes this award unique is the fact that the nominations are made and judging is done by peers who are at the center of mobile business development around the world: the Mobile Monday chapter founders and organizers! The Peer Awards nominees truly represent the best products/services from global mobile business hotspots in two categories: business-to-consumer (B2C), and business-to-business (B2B).
Altogether there were 11 finalists in this year's Global Peer Awards representing the best mobility products and services the world has to offer. The award for best consumer product or service was won by Olaf Lohman, the Canadian finalist, from ComVu for PocketCaster. The best business product or service was awarded to Michael Smith, the Japanese finalist, from Opera for its Opera 8 Mobile Browser for BREW.
On a personal note it was truly fantastic to finally meet in person with all the MoMo chapter organizers who attended from around the world. Representatives from established locations in Canada, China, England, Japan, France, Italy and the U.S were on hand along with new members starting soon in Brazil, Germany, India, Korea, Russia and Thailand. Read on for our post event summary with some of the highlights.
We all got together on Sunday the 7th for a Magical Mystery Tour style bus-ride out to Adventure Valley which included an un-scheduled stop along the way that abruptly cost our beloved Micah his “Transportation and Logistics Manager” position (by secret ballot of course!), en-route to the Villa Tippavaara for some R&R and our high-level dinner meeting over reindeer soup.
Monday the 8th was full blast conference networking with our 9am introduction to the assembled masses and some truly elite speakers making presentations through-out the day in 3 separate halls under the Trends, Profits and Fun theme tracks. The Global Peer awards hit full tilt, just after a tasty fresh salmon buffet, with companies making their best effort 3 minute product pitch and we were thrilled to see Tokyo's nomination in B2B category, Opera Japan, take 1st place. Note: the Italian judges are still under investigation for alleged intimidation tactics (”life is too short”) during the voting process for B2C nominees, however, in the end Com Vu truly did deserve the win. The evening was topped off with a great live performance from Finnish recording artists Kemopetrol followed by a rather late night on the town.
Tuesday morning came very early for many as we boarded the tour bus again, with fingers crossed, for visits to HP (what's with the main entrance revolving door there anyway?) and Nokia's head office (Wow.. first class product demo's and an awesome lunch buffet) followed by 3 presentations from Nexit Venture group companies back at the hotel. By this point it would be safe to say that everyone was getting a little foggy and needed a '5 minute' fresh-air walk downtown to a great little Nepalese restaurant.. and a nightcap or two of course.
By Wednesday morning most people were packing out for home after 4 days of perfect clear blue skies, while everyone (else) managed to make it to the airport on time - and to the right airline counter no less - the blondest amongst us didn't.. btw: what are they putting in the coffee on FinnAir..?!? At any rate, yours truly got to spend an extra day in Helsinki taking some photos and catching-up with old friends for dinner. Besides, I always wanted to ride in a classic Rolls Royce!
In closing we offer the most sincere thanks to our kind hosts (and sponsors) in Helsinki who have created this global community and arranged such an excellent event. Suffice to say that some of the very best mobile minds in the world were on-hand, by all accounts there were plenty of valuable lessons learned and connections made and we are already looking forward to May 2007. Meanwhile, there's a super collection of photos from several attendees on the trip uploaded to Flickr tagged as either MoMo or Mobile Monday. Enjoy!
Enjoy rainy season while it lasts! Before you know it, Tokyo's long hot summer will be here. With that in mind, your MoMo team decided to kick off the upcoming ‘Cool Biz' days on 10 July in style: chilling downstairs at SuperDeluxe with some ice-cold Stella, a tasty buffet and top-class mobile messaging and marketing presentations from Microsoft and DoubleClick.
In other news, Red Herring magazine dropped by last week and they are still open for nominations for genki companies to include on their Asia Top 100 list. The deadline is 23 June.
And while we have your attention: we are pleased to announce that NetTokyo is coming up on 22 July. This super summer fund raising event is one of the best networking opportunities around - just like MoMo! - with all proceeds going to charity. See you there 8)

It's hot on Tokyo's streets but even hotter in the corporate boardroom as enterprise and media players begin to look deeper into how the mobile space is developing and what path to profits their strategies should follow. MoMo Tokyo is looking forward to a killer 21 August event where we'll host an in-bound media study tour, with some 40 delegates expected to join us at KDDI's fabulous Designing Studio, in Harajuku. The presentations will focus on two key mobile areas: project management and building community services. Register now for what will undoubtedly be one of this month's hottest events!
Meanwhile, a quick heads-up:
The 2nd annual NetTokyo event in July raised over JPY800,000 for charity! Our thanks to all who attended and supported this worthy cause. It's an honour and a privilege for Mobile Monday Tokyo to be involved with the organisers bringing together Tokyo's annual “network of networks” meeting. While we're passing out congrats, the good folks at NaviBlog, who presented to MoMo Tokyo in May, also deserve a big pat on the back for making Red Herring Asia's Top 100 list. Best of luck to them for the final showdown in Hong Kong at the end of August.
Neeraj Jhanji — Founder & CEO — ImaHima
ImaHima at MoMoTo by Mobikyo KKImaHima, well known for their mobile-related community and instant-messaging projects in Japan, will introduce Atlassian's award-winning issue-tracking application JIRA and the world-leading enterprise wiki application Confluence. ImaHima and Atlassian partnered to develop, market and support Japanese versions of JIRA and Confluence. JIRA, with over 3,000 customers spanning 55 countries, has established a reputation as the de facto issue tracking application for projects, and Confluence, with over 1,500 customers, is now the world's most widely deployed commercial wiki. Confluence is a practical collaboration and knowledge management solution that combines the simplicity of a wiki with the powerful features enterprises demand.
Masato Uesu — Group Leader — KDDI DuoGate
DuoGate KDDI and Excite Japan introduced a new joint venture, DuoGate, in the spring of 2005. The portal offers a seemless suite of converged fixed-line and mobile services including mail, photos, music, gaming, GPS and — of course — Blogs. With over 80,000 active mobile bloggers signed-up for Duoblog since launch, they have captured an early lead in the user-generated community content space. The combination of KDDI's expertise in mobile Internet services, and Excite's PC-oriented business, architecture and operations expertise for portal sites has allowed both companies to integrate their strengths into a unique mobile and PC Internet offering — a task that has so far been difficult to achieve.

You're invited to MoMo Tokyo's 2nd Anniversary Event, 25 September 2006, at KDDI's fabulous Designing Studio, freshly updated with touch & try examples of au's newly announced handsets. We also look forward to introducing our new sponsors: Robert Leonard and DoubleClick, who - along with continued support from Jonckers Translation & Engineering - make our Tokyo events possible.
It's our birthday, so we've decided to change the evening's format from the usual presentations and present a special expert mobile panel, who will field your free-flow open-mike questions and provide fantastic insight into "Japan Mobile: Past, Present and Future".
And since MoMo Tokyo is entering the so-called ‘Terrible Twos,' we've decided that input from the local community would be in order to help us chart the future direction of the Tokyo chapter. Accordingly, we'll ask you to fill out this (simple!) feedback form in exchange for the ever-popular (and free!) drink ticket.
Finally, a quick follow-up to last month's ‘The Heat is On' event: thanks to the good folks from the eNews team at IFRA Germany who attended and, by all accounts, enjoyed their evening with MoMo followed by a super study week in Tokyo. Yoroshiku!

The Year of the Dog Greyhound has flown by and it's time once again for Tokyo's mobile community to come together for a well-deserved Kampai!
To finish off the year in style, here's the bonenkai event plan:
We have booked a swank venue in Roppongi, and will offer each registered guest two (2) free drink tickets plus a light buffet. For Mobile Monday global, 2006 will go down as the break-out year with 21 new cities launched - there are now 35 chapters worldwide. We are very pleased to announce that Jari Tammisto, CEO of Mobile Monday Oy, will be on hand to meet everyone and congratulate Tokyo for being the first affiliate location to debut events outside of MoMo's birthplace in Helsinki Finland. 8-)
